Fantastic Typewriter cake by Saahna Bryan

Description

Hi! I'm Saahna, 26 and I am extremely excited I got to enter this competition this year. It took me two days to choose from all the awesome t-shirt designs, but I finally chose "Fantastic Typewriter." I chose this cake because I loved the bright colors and it would be a challenge for me. This cake had soooooo many small parts it's crazy. I started out by making a paper model of the cake so all the pieces would be on the same size scale. Then I baked one sheet pan and three 9x13 pans of cake. I decided to use Gumpaste to make most of the parts and then fondant for the rest. It took me at least 24hrs (including drying time) to make all the parts for this cake. The labor was well worth it I loved how it turned out. The cake flavor is Chocolate Fudge cake and Red Velvet. I made two cake dowels out of gumpaste to use as cake support, and everything in and on this cake is edible. Yummy! After all the parts for the top part of the cake dried I glued them together with Royal Icing. My first thought when I saw all the black outlines on the t-shirt was, I can use vodka and food coloring to paint them on. After taking a second look at the cake a realized I would have to be putting on alot of the piece and the food coloring would smear, so I got some Gourmet Food Markers. Those worked alot better. After the cake was finished I really didn't want to cut it, but I sucked it up and did it. If I do say so myself, the cake was really good and super fudgy. The total time I spent on this cake was 38hrs. I can't wait to enter this contest again next year, I think I'm going to try making more than one next year.
Thanks for checking out my entry!
