Sorrow cake by Shannon kang

Description

My first thread cakes entry! I chose to do sorrow because I am drawn to doing grotesque, I-can't-wrap-my-head-around-eating-this type cakes and this sad little dead bird definitely fit the bill (pun intended ;)

The cake is made from red velvet cake with a salted caramel buttercream. I baked the cake on the first day and then put it in the fridge to chill overnight. On the second day he was ready to carve and decorate. His head and body are all cake, covered with a thin layer of buttercream and then black fondant. The wings, tail and pool of blood are also fondant. The legs, beak and lettering are gumpaste. Sorrow was made over two days. I love the contest and am already thinking about what to make for next year!
