Recessionopoly cake by Mary Burroughs

Description

So this summer I am an intern at a county engineer's office, and I have been telling all my co-workers about my cake decorating. Since I told them about my cakes, they said I should make them a cake to see how good my skills and cakes really were, so I obliged. I decided to make the cake into a threadcake and I wanted to use the design recessionopoly because it had a lot of tiny details and I always enjoy playing a game of monopoly. The cake was chocolate and white with buttercream frosting and fondant details. My co-workers loved the cake so much they didn't want to cut it, but once it was cut, it quickly disappeared. It took around 20ish hours to make this cake.

The shoe, thimble, iron, hat, coins, sign, dog, newspaper, and bag are all made out of gumpaste. To make the shoe, I rolled out a piece of gumpaste and cut out a sole with a craft knife. Then I cut out another piece of gumpaste for the upper part of the shoe and finished off the shoe with small pieces of gumpaste for the buttons. I then painted the shoe with silver edible paint after the shoe dried. To make the thimble I shaped a piece of gumpaste into a thimble and used a gumpaste tool to add the dimples and groves into the thimble. After it dried, I painted it with edible silver paint. The fire was made by twisting together red and yellow gumpaste and pulling out pieces to create the flames. To make the iron, I created a pattern out of paper for the bottom and cut out a piece of gumpaste using the pattern. I then rolled out a tube of fondant for the handle, attached it to the base of the iron, and painted the entire thing after it dried. For the hat I balled up a piece of gumpaste and used my squeeze bottle to form the hat around. The sign was a piece of gumpaste rolled out, cut, and draped over a piece of cardboard. The sign was finished off by painting the letters with edible food paint. The coins were created by rolling out a piece of yellow gumpaste and using a round decorating tip to cut out the coins. The newspaper was made by rolling out a piece of gumpaste, cutting it, and painting it with edible food paint. The dog and bag were just shaped to look like a dog and a bag, and detailing were added with a pointed gumpaste tool.

The cakes were baked in an 8 inch and a 6 inch square cake pan. The box cake was created from stacked pieces of cake and dents were carved into the sides to make the box look worn. The cake was then covered in fondant and already dried flaps of fondant were added. Mr. Monopoly was carved from stacked pieces of 6 inch square cake. The wheel barrow was created by cutting out a piece of cardboard for the bottom and for the support piece, cutting out a piece of cake in the shape of the wheel barrow, and covering the entire piece in fondant. The cake was finished off by placing all the pieces onto the fondant covered board.

I had a lot of fun making this cake and I hope you enjoy it.
