Description
This is my second Threadcake, and also...the second cake I've ever decorated. Ever.
I can say this was a learning experience, at the least!
I baked up a vanilla cake with some buttercream frosting, both recipes from bakingdom.com. I also made some marshmallow fondant, also with a recipe from bakingdom.
I started with the fences, hoping that they would dry out and become stiff enough to hold up. However due to heat/humidity, after 3 days of drying they were still pretty sad and saggy. I then started on the unicorn. I started trying to make it out of fondant, but it was just too gooey and sticky and droopy. So then I tried to mix some crumbs and frosting together and put it in the fridge to set up, and tried doing the basic shape out of that, and then covered it with the fondant. It seemed to work well at first. Then the heat got to it, and it started melting and sagging. I kept trying to patch it and fix it, but eventually gave up. I then got the idea to use green starburst to mold. It worked better, but it still got all sticky and melty in the heat. My boyfriend helped me mold the bear, but it just kept oozing, and colors kept running. Eventually I just gave it up as a lost cause and chalked it up to a learning experience.
I'm thinking for next year's Threadcake, I'll attempt to make it in the winter time, when I won't be dealing with so much heat and humidity.
The good news is, the cake and frosting itself is fantastic!
