Description
I'm a big fan of color, so when I saw this design while scrolling through the graphic options I fell in love with it immediately.
I started out by baking my delicious vanilla butter cake in rainbow form because I figured it should be as colorful inside as it is out. I baked and stacked a 8", three 6", and three 4" rounds, no internal support required. Carving this cake was pretty simple as I wasn't looking for a smooth shape. In fact, I had to go in a dig some cake out to give it a little more dimension in some areas. I also used the cake ball method on some of my scraps to build out on the cake. I barely had any shavings left, which is rare when carving away cake.
After crumb coating I covered in white fondant and used gumpaste to build some of the "flame" coming out of the rockets. I used some fishing wire to suspend the paint drops from the cake. I think they ended up looking very galactic, but not sure how close they resemble paint...oh well!
Then my favorite part...airbrushing!
The rocket was sculpted out of rice cereal treats, which were lightly brushed in melted chocolate for support, then covered in a thin layers of modeling chocolate before fondant for a smooth appearance. Rockets were airbrushed so I got the color I wanted, gumpaste details were added, and edible paints were used for the finishing touches. The rocket pieces were held together with melted chocolate, and I did use one toothpick to insert the rocket into the cake.
Upon completing the cake, I had a slice with some vanilla frozen yogurt which was delissssh and left me feeling fat. Just what a cake is supposed to do.
