Description
Last year I found out about Threadless through a blog entry about Threadcakes on CakeWrecks.com. (Yup, I found out about the cake contest before I found out about Threadless.com!)
I love everything about cakes (or anything sweet, for that matter) and when I found out about this year's contest, I knew I just had to enter!
It was a tough decision, but I chose to do the design "Fishing for Rainbow Trout". It's an adorable design that I thought would look sweet on a 2D cake.
I started by piping out the netting on the balloon with black royal icing. I cut a template of the balloon and "traced" the design onto parchment paper so I could peel it off later.
Then I baked the cake, making 2 layers for a sheet cake. I chose to bake my favourite - vanilla butter cake. I made some vanilla Swiss buttercream as well, and once the cake was cool, I layered and masked the cake. Then I covered it in white fondant.
Working with gum paste, I created the little boy and the cat, the balloon, clouds, and the three trout, with the help of some cut-out paper templates. I made the basket by weaving strips of gum paste and cutting out the shapes with a template.
When the gum paste pieces were dry, I painted the fish, and painted details onto the cat and the little boy.
I painted the cake with a blue background, using powdered food colouring and a bit of vodka.
Finally, I used royal icing to assemble all the components, and took some pictures!
I'm going to bring the cake over to my friend as a special birthday treat.
It looks (and smells) delicious!
