Pros Cons cake by Trina Tee

Description

I love this T design- obviously. I really wanted to make a 3D sculpted cake but couldn’t find a design to suit, so I thought I would have a go at interpreting this design into a cigar box.
I made two vanilla sheet cakes and buttercreamed them with a white choc berry swiss meringue buttercream. The layers were stacked and crumb coated and then measured. I made a cardboard template for the lid and sides and cut them out of fondant to let dry for a few days.
The cigars were made from modeling chocolate and brushed with a brown/grey/green petal dust to give a tobacco leaf finish. The cigar labels were individually made with fondant and hand painted with little images.
Once the sides were dry, I brushed them with a caramel coloured food colouring wash to give an old wooden look and once dry, painted with designs. ( I referenced a bunch of old cigar boxes and kind of mixed them up). The lid was done the same way, using an imprint from the original T Shirt design to get the lettering and sizing right. Once the sides were fitted, I covered the box for the lining and placed the cigars in. The ribbon was made with very thin fondant and pressed with a toothpick to make it look rippled. It was then dusted with antique gold powder dust.
Next was the little fondant clasps, painted with gold dust.
Once the lid was dry I attached it with royal icing. It needed a bit of support at the back, using some polystyrene sheets.
The board was covered and scored with a clay tool to achieve a wooden floor kind of groove, then washed with brown food colouring.
The whole cake took about 2 ½ to three days to allow for drying time and hand painting. Xx
p.s. I didn’t notice the skull in the woman’s hair till I started painting it. Subliminal advertising.
