Description
I first heard of Threadcakes last year after seeing a post about it on Cake Wrecks. I clicked the link and was in awe! I immediately began searching through the designs and fell in love with Sugar Land. I couldn't wait to make it, but vacations, family reunions, and a wedding cake took away my time. I wasn't going to let that happen again this year!
I started making all the little characters out of gumpaste and fondant. After most of the characters were at least started, I made the candy canes, banner, tree stump, bushes, and other treats. I remade the ice cream cone guy once, because I didn't like how he turned out the first time. I had to remake the banner once as well due to my son's interference. I'm not even sure how long it exactly took me to make them all. I just worked on them here and there, whenever I could. Some characters have painted features, in which I used vodka and icing color instead of paint. I used this on the candy canes and lollipops as well.
When all the characters were finally done (and finally dry), I whipped up a vanilla bean sheet cake. I dug out my chocolate river and covered the whole cake with butter cream. I then covered everything with a light green colored fondant. I set about decorating the land, starting with the path. I rolled the gumpaste very thin, then beat it with the roller to make it a beaten path! I filled the river, added in the bridge, and started adding in the bushes.
I was a nervous wreck putting the bigger pieces on. I was almost sure everything was going to fall over as I tried to use as little supports as possible. Only the banner candy canes, the main tooth, ice cream cone, and chocolate bar had tooth pick supports. To my relief, everything stayed up. The balloon strings did break, however, and I had to reattach them with icing. My son was very willing to eat the cake, though I hated cutting into it. All in all, I had a great time working on my first Threadcake and I can't wait to do it again!
