Rainbow Worrier cake by Deborah Ray

Description

I'm relatively new to cake decorating & I needed to select a design that was not too difficult for my experience level & still be a cake I wanted to make (& eat). I like bright colors so I chose Rainbow worrier. I'm going to try to enter 2 more cakes before the deadline...each a little more complicated.

I used box cake mix - 2 actually but dyed the mix in the same 6 colors of the rainbow in the tshirt design. I did a swirly tie-dye pattern with the mix. I used 12" round pan with the heat core. I was ecstatic when I realized the heat core would actually make my center arc of the rainbow. I told you I was new....LOL. I cut the cake exactly in half & layered the 2 halves. the filling is the same buttercream used for crumb coat.

I made the Wilton buttercream recipe on their website but added 1tsp almond extract in addition to the vanilla extract recipe calls for. I actually doubled the recipe & ended up using almost all of it!

Mixing the icing colors is always the most tedious & least fun part of the decorating in my opinion. But I think I did well in getting nice bright colors. I colored some leftover black fondant to the light grey color for the cake board. Let me tell ya that getting black fondant to grey is just as hard as getting white fondant to black. Lesson learned.

I don't really know how much time this took me in full because I baked it on Sat night. Worked on it mostly on Sunday morning before work & then finished it up this morning (monday) before work. I took it to work today & everyone enjoyed it....I had no leftovers. Cake is always best when shared with friends.
