Description
I chose Xylosaurus for my niece because she has a little xylophone that she plays with and, even though she’s only 10-months-old, I’m sure she is planning a glamorous future in paleontology. I wanted a cake that the baby could have a bit of. I chose banana cake and reduced the sugar a bit. Between the layers I used only maple syrup to moisten the cake and cream cheese instead of icing.
The Xylosaurus and its little friends were all made of white chocolate. I decided to paint everything on parchment paper with chocolate. I really haven’t had much luck with that terrible plastic paint brush that you get with chocolate making kits. I bought a cheap set of paint brushes for oil painting and they are AMAZING! I ended up making everything a little thicker than planned because the Xylosaurus’s head and tail broke off the first time I tried to lift it.
When I finally got it all put together and supported, at the point of no return – that’s when I realized that I got my rainbow in the wrong order. I was so frustrated I didn’t care if the dumb dino broke in a million pieces. Luckily I kept going because it was pretty cute in the end. Used 1 toothpick to attach the music note and 2 straws as dowels to keep the top layer stayed in place to support the Xylosaurus.
My niece thought it was pretty cool – even if she didn’t know what it was.
