Description
I decided on this entry because it was a favorite tv show of mine and my parents last year for Halloweeen were a killer Fred & Wilma! (My mom even died her hair red for the night.) I also wanted to do something that would use the cake itself as part of the sculpture. I am not a baker, I am an artist using cakes as one of my sculpting materials. Did I mention I have the worst kitchen set up ever?
Despite the horrible kitchen, I used Betty Crocker butter pecan cake mix with the basic ingredients. I whipped up my own frosting from scratch using Crisco, vanilla, milk, powdered sugar, and cocoa powder. It was so delish! I couldn't keep from eating it while putting the cake together! I concluded the cake ingredients with fondant, using a basic marshmallow/powdered sugar recipe. The baking took approximately one hour to get everything ready for construction.
The cake was a two layer 9" x 13" cake. I frosted the sides and dug out the middle for the fossil to set. I saved all the internal cake for the end clumps of "dirt". I sculpted all the bones with fondant, painted them with food color paste and placed them inside the cake, then finished painting the bones inside the cake. Once all the bones and clothing was in place, I added clumps of cake and used it to make dirt piles, as well as adding a bit of black food coloring to the chocolate frosting for added dirt layering.
It was a very tasty cake and everyone eating it couldn't stop eating it! It was very buttery and delicious!
