Into the Sea cake by Kelly Harshman

Description

Last year my entry was decorated with fondant. This year I was looking for a bit more of a personal challenge and wanted to go fondant free. I've been experimenting with some different techniques and decided on a frozen buttercreme transfer for this cake.

I chose the design based on the relaxing but whimsical feel of getting lost in the bubbles and thought that it would be a fun challenge.

I sketched out the design and started to work while I waited for my vanilla fudge marble cake to cool. The design is really pretty intricate so I did the outlines by hand with a toothpick and then piped in the bubbles.

I chose to use a "grass" tip for the background color to add a real "bubbles" texture. After smoothing the back, I put it in the freezer overnight. Then I transferred the image, smoothed it out and put on finishing touches.

As you can see from the picture, my dear fiance got to enjoy the reward of all the work with me.

I think it turned out pretty well... though now I just want to make another cake. Hmm... maybe next week ;)
