This is now my second entry in the competition! I thought this T-shirt was cute, but I think it came out even better in cake!
Well now I will give you a little insight into the 15 hours it took me to create these basking beauties...
I began by baking 2 chocolate cakes for the base and a peanut butter pound cake for the toast. I layered the chocolate cakes with peanut butter frosting in the middle, crumb coated the top and sides, and then covered the cake with a layer of homemade marshmallow fondant. The toast were cut out of the peanut butter pound cake using a template made out of cardboard. I crumb coated the toast with canned chocolate icing, and then covered each of them with a layer of brown homemade marshmallow fondant.
I used a mortar and pestle to finely crush graham crackers, which were spread across the top of the cake to represent the sand. The easiest parts of the cake were probably the sun tan lotion bottle and the beach towels, since they were just modeled from fondant.
To create the tan lines, I made bathing suits out of fondant and lightly sprinkled each piece of toast with cinnamon. The fondant was removed and some cinnamon was brushed away to remove some of the larger clumps. The arms and legs were made from fondant-covered pretzel sticks for support. I made the sunglasses out of milk chocolate, light blue, and red melted baking chocolates. I drew the sunglasses by hand using chocolate squeeze bottles. The painted the nails, eye lashes, and mouths using a food coloring/ vodka mixture.
The cake was enjoyed by the whole family at our annual family reunion!
