M aw cake by Cindy van den Hoonaard

Description

After reading about te contest on the bakerella site, I couldn’t stop thinking about making cake.
Little did I know about the challenges that were coming my way. I never made a cake like that in my life so it was a lot of firsts for me.
Picking the design was already a task, but after a lot of my first picks were already made, I went with this cute cat under the sheets.
I choose the recipe of a ‘victorian cake’ from a cookbook and got all the ingredients. But after seeing the lines on the design I knew I needed some help with making those. Luckily I found some help in my future mother in law’s pasta maker. Now I was good to go.

I started baking on Saturday night and 24 hours later I had the first bite.
Making the cake took me about 9 hours in total.
I started with making the two cakes with one brownie pan in a small oven. After that the night was already over. I ran out of butter for the buttercream and mascarpone for the filling but the stores here in Holland only open after 16.00 on Sunday’s, so I couldn’t start decorating until then.
I made a vanilla buttercream and I had to leave out my mascarpone filling because I couldn’t find any at the store. So the filling ended up buttercream and strawberry jelly. After cutting the cake, I used the leftover cake to make the cat’s body. I mixed it with a bit of buttercream to make a sort of cakeclay. After that I started rolling out the white and chocolate fondant, and kept my fingers crossed as I rolled it through the pastamaker. It worked great and I could start decorating the striped sheet. I wanted to make the cake all fondant , but decorating the cat’s face that way became very difficult. It worked out and I was very happy with the end result. It was already a bit late that night for having cake, but we enjoyed it anyway. Thanks for having this awesome cake contest. Now that I had some practice I’m definitely ready for the next level.
