Description
I chose Sushi for my next cake because I LOVE sushi and I thought the design was so cute! I could see how you could get a very cool cake by making individual rice pieces and the pieces of fish to resemble blankets. The design was also bright and more colorful, unlike my last submission.
So this cake was fun and took approximately 10 hours to complete mainly because I made so many changes. The fact I blindly choose round cakes to begin with was weird? I just rushed into this one too fast. After I completed it the design bothered me A LOT so I decided I had to fix it. First, the rectangle shape of the tray would look better on a rectangle cake. Second, the entire cake was decorated with fondant. Experimenting with fondant, I realized, cakes covered in smooth fondant with other elements in fondant is overkill! (Unless the cake is highly detailed sculpted pieces with a lot of color) I’d much rather see a variety of texture. So, after I made the changes I was much happier with the outcome. The texture you get from buttercream icing pairs so much better with little figures made of smooth fondant. (But, that’s just my opinion!)
The little pieces of sushi are made from small pieces of cake and covered and decorated almost like petit fours. After I covered them I began on the details of rice! I rolled out very thin rolls of fondant and cut tiny pieces with a scissor. I then picked each one up and gently rolled it to resemble a piece of rice. Much like any project, the beginning took awhile, but soon I had a technique and system down and finished hundreds of pieces of rice fairly quickly. I attached each piece of rice with royal icing. After that I separately colored small pieces of fondant for the different pieces of fish to lay atop the pieces. I ended with tiny rolls of black fondant cut, rolled and placed for the eyes and mouth of the sushi.
On my first option I cut and covered a piece of cake to serve as the tray the sushi would lay on. I didn’t see the need to add legs. My second option, which I like much better was a flat tray with an indented line for some detail. I tried to bend the outer edges of the tray up and let it dry in the refrigerator. Impatient, I pulled it out early and quickly finished the cake.
In the end, I could have submitted it just like that, but again I had to add a piece of floral wire for the Z z z’s. They are cut out of black fondant with an exacto and attached to the wire with a dab of buttercream. And – it was done! I think it’s a pretty cute cake anyone would love. The pieces of sushi were so good and I really enjoyed the texture of the rice pieces. They were like candy.
