Description
I picked Goliath since I love this design and thought it would be fun to make the little jelly men out of actual jelly (jell-o?).
I started out by sculpting four little guys in clay and taking a mould in food safe silicone. Next I made some sponge cake in a square tray (twice) and cut out 2 identical shapes to make up the body and stuck them together using bamboo skewers.
I drilled a couple of holes into the board I was working on so I could support the cake on skewers and cut strips of cake that slotted onto the skewers, this supported the body nicely, I cut some wedges out here and there to make the body lean over a bit and so arms could fit in nicely.
Once the main body of the cake was done, I made up some fondant icing and sculpted feet, hands and a face, painting the detail on in black food colouring with a fine paint brush.
Next it was time to start coating all the sponge in Royal icing which gives a nice spiky effect, I figured all the linework in the original design represent fur so this was the best way I could think to interpret that.
Finally I poured a couple of lots of jelly men and stuck them on, took a few photos and got on with the business of devouring poor old Goliath and all his tiny Jelly Davids.
