Sushi cake by Claire Murphy

Description

As soon as I saw this picture, I knew it was time to start experimenting with using rice krispie squares in my cakes. Since I wanted to get nice big lumpy pieces of sushi, I decided to make my own. That was a mistake. Turns out melted marshmallows are a lot stickier than one would expect. Nonetheless, it got done. I covered them in a thin layer of fondant to be sure they'd look nice and rice-y. Then I added the faces and arms, made some gumpaste fish slices, and it was cake time.

I was worried that if I tried to do this one in two layers, the top layer would collapse, so I decided to just bake one large cake and carve it instead. Sadly, part of the cake still collapsed while I was adding frosting, so I just had to go with it. Since the cake was chocolate, I decided to use chocolate fondant to cover it. Adding the sushi was tricky as I was now understandably paranoid about more of the cake collapsing. In the end, it all stayed together.

People were a tad confused when I showed up with this one, but once I assured them it was all edible, they got stuck in, and it was gooood
