Description
This is my second year entering Threadcakes. When I saw the “Oh Carp” design I knew I had to do it. My freshman English teacher was named Ms. Carp and my friends and I had purchased and worn this very shirt to show our appreciation to her.
I began the process by making the cakes, fondant, and modeling chocolate. I ended up making three batches of vanilla cake and one batch each of marshmallow fondant and white chocolate modeling chocolate. Once everything had been made I began to work on the giant carp. I ended up using Rice-Krispie treats, modeling them into the shape of a carp. I frosted it with buttercream and covered the front with a rolled out piece of white fondant. Next I cut out scales using an oval cookie cutter and layered them onto the fish. Once the entire fish was covered I used blue and green dust, as well as some silver, to brush the fish, giving it color and making it look more fishlike.
Once the fish was complete I dyed some gum paste brown and rolled out pieces for the roof of the house. I also used the gum paste to make shards to place around the base to give the appearance of the broken house. Next I took the eight inch square cakes I made, making stacks of three, and covered them in brown fondant. I moved the cakes and placed them on the board, detailing the sides of the cake with siding and windows. Then using royal icing I attached the roof and shards to the house.
The cake took me 4 days of work to complete and is entirely edible aside from two support tubes. With the cake finished I invited my friends over to eat it (while wearing their Oh Carp shirts) and celebrate. It was yummy! I cannot wait until next year’s contest.
