Sing A Song of Freedom cake by Sarah Erickson

Description

Hello! My name is Sarah, and if you saw my last entry, you know that I'm eleven and you can see that my photography has improved because we got a new camera recently! (Insert ooh's and aah's and/or applause here) I decided to make this cake as kind of an early birthday cake. (Is it weird that I want to make three threadcakes for my birthday? Say no.) On to the cake!

The cake was strawberry on the inside, so I put some strawberries in the blender to make strawberry puree. I wasn't in my kitchen, so I had to bake the cake in a rectangular pan and cut out circles with a lid. I stacked the cakes together with strawberry frosting. Then, I made some marshmallow fondant, mixing mostly by hand (the mixer couldn't handle it; it started smoking :/). I dyed it some of it black and a little bit of it red. I covered the cake and mixed black food coloring with water to dab on the cake. Then, I printed out the design and cut out the bird and cut it out of the red fondant. It was too big, so I had to perform some surgery on the bird. After that, I cut some key shapes from black fondant and applied them with water. Then, I made some frosting and dyed it black (I had to use so much food coloring that it tasted really bitter). I piped thin lines in the spaces and under the keys. After THAT, I wondered about how to do the hook. I decided on wire wrapped around a toothpick and wrapped in fondant. I KNOW wire isn't food safe, but only the toothpick was stuck in the actual cake, so all should be fine.

The cake itself was DELICIOUS and everyone loved it. The whole cake took about a day to make. Thanks for reading!
