Description
Let me begin by saying that while I am an artist, I can’t bake…and my sister is a baker, but not an artist. So when I found Threadcakes, it seemed like the perfect thing for us. It was a fun project that combined our talents and neither of us had much going on for us this summer anyways. So we decided to give it a go.
“Voyages Over Edinburgh” has always been one of my favorite Threadless designs and one that I was really excited to turn into cake. Our cake is a two-tiered vanilla white cake, with vanilla buttercream frosting and marshmallow fondant.
We started with the baking, with my sister making the two vanilla cakes and frosting as I made the marshmallow fondant. We put the cake together and let it cool, so by evening I was drawing out the little buildings. I freehanded the city, using an edible ink pen for the foreground and a fine-tip brush and mixed food coloring for the buildings in the distance. After finishing that, I went over some lines with black icing pen to add some dimension to the buildings.
The balloons were white marshmallow fondant, painted with food coloring to achieve the watercolor-like effect. We painted balloons on the distant background (painted directly onto the cake surface), middle ground (painted circles of fondant), and foreground (painted on sugar cookies covered in fondant). Once that dried, I added the balloon patterns with ink pen, icing pen, and food coloring, completing the cake.
This was a very ambitious project for both of us, since we had never worked with fondant. We had never made buttercream or baked a two-tiered cake before, nor had we ever decorated a cake. Still, we jumped headfirst into the project, and we were really pleased with the result. Of course, we ran into obstacles along the way—spilled our powdered sugar everywhere, messed up our fondant, nearly giving up during 3 am decorating sessions. Yet somehow we managed to put together this cake that we absolutely love. We loved it so much that it was kind of painful for us to cut it up to eat. Thank you, Threadcakes/Threadless for this amazing opportunity. We can’t wait to do it again next year!
