Cake IS awesome! This little guy was the perfect design for me to attempt for the my first 3D cake, since he didn't require a lot of sculpting. I used three 6 inch round chocolate cakes with a vanilla buttercream filling and coating (and for the writing). I first covered the cake completely with white fondant. Rolling out the brown tinted fondant, I used the bottom of one of the cake pans to measure the chocolate topping, then used a small sculpting tool to outline the drips and then cut it free.
The arms, guitar and lightning bolts are gum paste, and the details on the guitar are black edible food marker. The guitar is held together by gumpaste and tooth picks, and tooth picks are holding the arms onto the sides. The base, the legs and the bottom of the cake are a wooden structure (there is a cake board between the wood and the cake. The base is covered in fondant, the legs are gumpaste.
It was pretty hot here when I was making the cake, so it took about 6 hours altogether to assemble and decorate since the fondant kept perspiring and things were taking a while to stick together. Only took about 10 minutes to cut him up and eat the cake, though! Chocolate cake is my favourite, and he was delicious!
