I was very excited to get my new oven before the Threadcakes contest ended, though it was cutting it very close. The hardest part was choosing a design that I thought I could finish in time around my schedule.
Since I had a plethora of zucchini I decided to try a recipe from Amanda of "I am baker" and following her lead I went with chocolate icing, using my go to recipe.
I baked four six inch layers, frosted and stacked them and let them set overnight in the fridge (I had to use food grade skewers to keep the layers from sliding off, it was just a little hot in my kitchen and the frosting was super soft).
For the clean monster, I went with home made rice krispie treats and once shaped, using lollipop sticks to hold the head and body together, I covered it first in white fondant then green. After he was done I realized he was a little overpowering for the size of the cake, I admit I was thinking I used the 8 inch pan while I was making him. I also covered the cake board and cake with black fondant. Next came the spiny bits and the building flats, I didn't use the image exactly for the number since I wanted enough to go all the way around the cake. I let the "buildings" dry out overnight to make sure they would stay up right and not droop.
Lastly I made the sponge, spray bottle and arms: all the little bits are made out of fondant, for the arms I used some florist wire and lollipop sticks to be the "bones" and covered them with fondant. Now the buildings were dry so I glued them (using gum glue, which is basically gum paste and water) to the fondant covered cake and painted in the windows using an edible paint (a bit of vodka to thin out the gel paste colour, a daffodil yellow gel paste and a bit of "white-white" icing colour. The arms and spiny bits were the last thing added.
All in all, I worked on this cake for approximately 7 hours and was a bit rushed for time, for me it's all still a learning process and with every cake I get a bit better... lol well at least I believe I do. My two kids couldn't wait to have a slice and the rest I plan on sharing with my co-workers tomorrow. The zucchini cake is surprisingly light and very yummy, it pairs really well with the chocolate icing. I hope you've enjoyed seeing my cake as much as I've enjoyed making it. One thing I learned from this is that I am really not a very good photographer, I think a camera and some lessons are in order. :)
