Description
This cake is my first venture into 3 dimensional cakes! I started with a trip to the hardware store, and had a friend build a basic frame to set the cakes on. The cake making/building process took 2 days, and started with the arms and the policemen, which were made out of fondant and gumpaste. Then I baked the cakes (a doctored up chocolate box mix) and got them ready for assembly. I first tried to make the bottom of the donut out of rice crispy treats, but that turned out to be a big mess. After that, I started stacking the cakes on the frame, separating the layers with chocolate butter cream icing. For the more "hard to balance" spots, I used a cake-pop mixture (on the top), and candy clay to hold the sides together (a substitute for the not-so-structurally-sound rice crispy treats). The donuts skin and pink frosting were made with a thin layer of fondant, and decorated with fondant sprinkles. The fondant also worked nicely for the shoes and small details. The arms and policemen were suspended with the help of a couple of dowels and toothpicks.
At one point in the construction, I REALLY thought about giving up...but after all that frustration, I think it turned out GREAT!! It was pretty difficult to bring myself to cut into it, but besides looking fantastic it turned out delicious!
