Bad Hair Day cake by Monika Salkauskas

Description

I just loved this simple, bright and fun design! Although it could be done as a 2D cake I wanted to see the whole, spherical sun character come to life. The ball involves two cakes, sliced, stacked and layered with vanilla buttercream: The bottom was a chocolate, Sacher-style cake, the top half a vanilla sponge cake. The fondant was made from scratch and dyed a sunny yellow. The rays are made of melted, tempered white chocolate, dyed with a lighter shade of yellow to achieve the same colour as the fondant. The assembly required a four lollipop sticks to keep the 6" diameter cake ball stable and two more to hold up the rather heavy chocolate arm. The comb and the face details were piped with melted dark chocolate. Despite the relatively simple flavour combinations it was delicious and happily devoured by young and old at a children's birthday get-together. The whole process, including baking time, took about 6 hours.
