Description
As soon as I saw this design I knew I wanted to make it into a cake.
I knew the most difficult part would be the antlers. For the support structure for the antlers I used a heavy gage wire. I ran it all the way through the cake board and attached it to the bottom. I then constructed the cake portion, which is the deers body, around the wires. I used a vanilla pound cake so it would hold it's shape better.
After masking and covering the cake in white fondant I added the details such as ears and legs with more fondant and then painted it with black food coloring mixed with vodka to resemble the design. I then cut out small flower shapes out of more white fondant and attached them to resemble spots on the deer’s back.
I created the flowers and the birds out of gum paste. After allowing them to dry for a couple hours I attached them to the cake. For the flying birds I used thin white thread to hang them from the antlers.
The whole process of decorating this cake took me a full day of dedicated work (which ended up being around 12-14 hours). I was very pleased with the result.
