Long Journey cake by trisha patterson

Description

The cake inside was a devil's food chocolate cake with homemade buttercream frosting. I carved the cake to give it a 3D wave effect, then covered it with a thin layer of frosting, and white fondant. I also covered the board with fondant. I used gumpaste tools to get more definition to the waves, and the ship before the fondant got too dry. Then I mixed gel food coloring with water to get a watercolor type of effect, and layered on colors in light washes. I also flicked some splatters on with the paintbrush to give more texture.
I mixed a whole bunch of food coloring and a little meringue powder into my buttercream so that it would harden a little bit once it was on the cake, and piped all the lines onto the waves, and outlined the ship.
The killer octopus is fondant painted with food coloring, and used different sizes of icing tips cookie-cutter style to give it tentacles. Everything is edible on this cake. I used gumpaste for the mast and flag, and the piece coming out of the front of the boat that the octopus is grabbing.
I have to say the thing I was most proud of on this cake is the chain attached to the anchor. The whole time I was making this cake that chain kept popping into my head, and I could not figure out how I was going to make a realistic looking chain. When it came time to make it, I just rolled out a very thin snake of fondant, and started messing around with a #5 icing tip, and I think what I came up with is pretty convincing. I painted the chain and anchor with a mixture of edible luster dust and lemon juice, which I wasn't sure would work, but since I didn't have any vodka in the house, I thought I'd give it a try, and it worked great.
I invited a bunch of family over to enjoy the cake with me, and everyone thought it was quite tasty!
