Description
This is my fourth time entering a Threadcakes competition, and like always, it has been an awesome experience! This year I did something different, and as you can clearly see, my cake does not look exactly like the Threadless design. I have always liked this design, however, when I saw the original submission (not the printed design) I fell in love with all the colors, and so I decided to follow the color scheme of the submitted design rather than the printed design.
You can see the original colored design here.
Anyways, I started by making all the fish and reef out of white, blue or red
gumpaste. Some of the pieces were sooo tiny that it took a long time. The worst part was trying to get them to fit together correctly, but still look just like the design. When that was done, I painted everything with food coloring. This was my favorite part and I really enjoyed trying to match the colors up as perfectly as possible. It was a bit of a headache though, since some of the pieces required several coats of paint, and anyone who has painted fondant with food coloring knows that it comes off very easily. For the highlights I used some white petal dust mixed with water.
Once all the pieces were done, I baked and iced the cake and then covered it in fondant. I covered the board with fondant as well. Fitting all the pieces together was an absolute headache, but I was able to get them all on without much breakage. For the finishing touches I used food coloring and petal dust to paint the board around the cake to make the water shadows.
The cake itself is a lemon vanilla bean cake with white chocolate chips, covered in Italian meringue buttercream. For the decorations I only used fondant, gumpaste, food coloring, and petal dust, so everything was 100% edible. A few hours after the cake was finished I cut it up for my family and it was greatly enjoyed. Overall, I’m super happy with how it turned out and I really enjoyed making it. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in another awesome Threadcakes competition!
