Aaah so stoked to be finally submitting my first entry to Threadcakes.. The hardest part was deciding between all the sweet designs!! Took me like two days haha not the best decision-maker here. But finally I managed to make a shortlist and selected SUBterrain from the final three.
I liked the striking colour scheme and seeming simplicity, with all the little details that emerge when you look closer. I thought it would be a great place to start. And funnily enough I just so happened to have leftover fondant in pretty much exactly these colours - it was meant to be!
I made a vanilla butter cake with mocha buttercream (both from scratch of course) which was nommy, as was the cake in both its batter and baked forms :) I also made some marshmellow fondant to cover the cake, and I added cocoa powder to darken it down before finishing off with black and blue food dye to make a very deep teal colour.
I printed out a colour copy and sketched the outlines onto bake paper, but I wanted to upscale the size slightly so I cut all the pieces freehand and just used the bake sheet as a guide to measure against. This is why some of the original details are not on my cake, or look abit different. It turned out to be quite tricky to fit all the pieces in their exact places, so I decided it was okay to take a bit of creative license (otherwise I would have never been actually able to put this up - perfectionist lol)..
I used meringue for cement and touched up the white bits with black food colour (mixed with tequila ha coz I didn't want to crack a fresh voddy) and also used this to paint some of the tiny dark details within the mechanics. Putting it together was like a jigsaw puzzle.. Fun times :)
Overall I had a rad time working on all the elements of this project, and will definately be entering again next year.. Good luck to all the other awesome submissions, hope you guys like my lil effort :D
