Description
I've been lurking around Threadcakes for years, meaning to enter, and the fact that it fell around Halloween this year gave me the final push. I was scrolling the designs when I saw the Teddy Bear Picnic, and remembered a blog I'd seen about making zombie teddy figures - seemed like fate, and perfect for my flat's scary movie night!
The cake is pumpkin spice, filled with chocolate ganache, all made from scratch. It was then covered with very dark grey sugarpaste, which turned out to add an extra Halloween effect after the cake was cut, when the black colouring leached out of the sugarpaste and down the cake. The bears are sculpted from sugarpaste, with some strands of spaghetti for a little extra support.
The cake was baked on the 29th, filled iced and decorated on evening of the 30th, completed for Halloween on the 31st. Decorating took around 4 hours start to finish. I hadn't had time to make the bears in advance so had to work out some interesting support structures.
The final touches of the tree silhouettes were painted on with food colouring, to tie the cake together, and remind people not to go into those woods, you might stumble across a teddy bear picnic!
