Geek Vase cake by Littlestar Murals

Description

This is my first Threadcakes entry! This year I made a cake for my dad and it turned out so well that I have been eager to make more cakes! So I came across this competition and thought....how exciting! I had to enter! I do not have much experience in cake making, I have only baked for family really and I have only made two 3D cakes before.
Anyway so I chose the Geek vase design as I am studying a history degree and have been studying Greek vases, so loved the design. I wanted to make an ancient looking vase and wanted it to look like it was on display.
The cake is a vanilla sponge, I made 4 layers. I used a plastic biscuit box turned upside down as a cake stand and pierced a hole through the centre for a dowel rod. I am now planning to buy a drill and make sturdy supports as I ended up having a 'cake-tastrophe!' I had sculpted the shape of the vase and was so pleased, everything was going so well. Then the dowel moved and split the cake in half :(
After a few tears and a lot of sulking I decided to use a piece of cake that hadn't fallen off the board and sculpt a smaller vase. I used cocktail sticks to fix the handles. Next time I will do my cake in advance just incase a problem arises! I wish I had time to do it again!
