Description
I made this for a friend for her birthday. She loves sushi, so I thought it would be perfect for her. It's a vanilla buttermilk cake, filled with vanilla custard, and covered with vanilla italian meringue buttercream and marshmallow fondant.
I painted the sushi "board" with brown food coloring and vodka, to make a wood grain effect. I cut out small rectangles of cake and coated when with frosting and then rolled then in fondant "rice" that I made by passing the fondant through a potato ricer and cutting short lengths with a sharp knife. Then I made the sea food with colored fondant, and touched up the colors a little bit with food coloring, when needed. Finally, I added tiny rice hands and used melted chocolate to give them tiny, sleepy faces. It took a few hours to do all the fondant aspects of the cake, but overall, wasn't too time consuming.
It was really tasty, and my friend loved it.
