A King in Every Corner cake by Nanthini Retnam

Description

This is my second Threadcakes entry and it took me ages to complete! I chose this design as I wanted something elaborate and challenging. Seeing this was based on GoT, I just had to pick it.
I wanted to expand on the title of the design and added the Iron Throne on the top, with the dragons in 3D. I also added Joffrey's crown at the base of the cake.
Initially I planned for four 6" chocolate cakes with different fillings to reflect the colours outside -- salted caramel for the stag, vanilla mint for the direwolf, raspberry for the lion and chocolate ganache for the dragons -- BUT sadly, after baking and ganaching all four cakes, I decided it was way too tall and didn't want to risk the cake toppling over as I did not use any major support structure internally (no centre dowel). The final cake was made using three of the four 6" cakes stacked one on top the other with dowel rods on the bottom and middle tier.
I also baked a small red velvet cake for the iron throne as I thought it would be cool to cut into the throne to reveal a blood red cake underneath.
All decorations were made using a mix of fondant and gumpaste. The decorations on the centre of the cake were hand-cut using paper templates I made based on the original threadless design. The crown was also made by hand-cutting the individual pieces based on paper templates. The throne was a labour of love as I made each sword individually and tried to have different designs for each hilt.
In the end, I really liked how it all came together and thoroughly enjoyed the process of making this cake.
* Non-edible support:
- 4 dowel rods on the bottom and middle tier cakes.
- Wire on stag's antler and on both Viserion and Rhaegal's arm/wings
- Wooden skewer for Viserion's body
