Description
This was my second time entering the Threadcakes competition. This year I looked for a design that was cute and colorful and wouldn't require complicated inedible supports. I started by baking my favorite cake recipe. The cake turns out quite dense so it's good for carving. While the cake was baking, I made the background rainbow and "Sunday!!" sign. This was piped using a flooding technique and royal icing. I left this on the counter to dry overnight.
The next day, I carved the ice cream dish out of half of the cake. Then I mixed the cut-off parts and leftover cake pieces with some of the icing to make a "cake clay", which is basically the same stuff used to make cake pops. I used this cake clay to make the ice cream scoops and banana.
The most challenging part came when I covered the cakes with fondant. I had to find a way to make the dish look transparent. I decided to cover it in fondant that was the same color as the image background and then pipe a white outline around the cake with royal icing. When I covered the ice cream with fondant, I also rubbed it with a paper towel to give it the texture that appears in the picture. The cherries on top were made from balls of fondant and secured with pieces of dried spaghetti. All of the details were painted with a mixture of food coloring and rum. The sprinkles were made from tiny ropes of fondant that were cut into small pieces. I finally attached the background rainbow to two bamboo skewers with melted white chocolate. These skewers were the only inedible supports used.
And of course the best part was eating it. I couldn't bear to eat the entire thing myself, so I recruited my cousin to help. He was more than happy to oblige.
I also made a time-lapse video of the entire decoration process and posted it to my youtube page here
