What could be better than taking two things I love and putting them together?! Sandwich and cake?! I had to do it! It was a great opportunity for me to experiment with the elusive modeling chocolate I keep hearing so much about.
To begin the process, I baked cupcakes using my favorite chocolate cake recipe for the core of the sandwich, then I baked butter cake for the bread slices. Next I covered a wooden board with fondant for the base. I used wood this time so I could actually glue the sandwich legs into the board for the best support possible... you just never know!
Next I hot glued the bottom bread support to the legs and base and started the build! I made two giant cake pops for the bread pieces for extra durability, then froze them for the fondant process. Once it was chilled I covered the bread with fondant on the bottom bread board, as well as making the legs, shoes and arms. Have to start from the bottom, right?
After that I made and dyed all of the modeling chocolate necessary for the cold cuts and glued them on with 'mustard yellow' frosting. After stacking some of the pieces up I drilled the top bread base to the core cake dowel (in the middle of he cake). Everything remained food safe as all wood pieces were covered with plastic wrap.
Once all of the sandwich fillings were placed I used gel colors to paint on the details, stuck the arms in and had a Totally Stacked photo shoot!
The total process took about a week, from building, baking, to finish. I am officially in love with modeling chocolate and will be looking forward to using it in the future.
