Description
I was intrigued by how intricate this image "FIXING A BROKEN HEART" was. I decided that I wanted to use a single piece of white fondant and cut the image of the robot out of only that piece.
I started by making a chocolate cake, just because it is one of my favorites to make and eat. The frosting is a traditional buttercream. Baking the cake and buttercream took about 2 1/2 hours total.
When I built the cake I thought it would be nice to make the filling layer of buttercream red to emphasize the robot's heart. I wanted to make the background color of the cake pop too, since the original image was just white on white. Blue seemed to make the red and white stand out. Building the cake and putting on the blue fondant base layer only took about 30 minutes.
The most time consuming and painstaking part was cutting out the robot image. I started by printing a black and white copy of the image that I could use almost like a stencil. I took sewing pushpins and poked small holes in the fondant that followed the lines of the picture. It reminded me of carving a pumpkin as a kid and using one of those kits. This was fun, but definitely took a lot more time then I remembered pumpkin carving taking. It took 2 hours to cut the robot image into the fondant.
Finally I had to put the image on the cake. I decided to freeze the white fondant, so it would be stiff enough for me to remove from my silt pat and place on the cake. It worked thankfully without destroying the robot. I definitely did not want to have to redo that! To finish the cake I piped over the robots heart with red buttercream to emphasize it, piped red gears on the side of the cake, and a white border. This took about 20 minutes.
I have never done a cake like this before, but really enjoyed that challenge it gave me. It also helped that it looked and tasted good!
