Mademoiselle Galaxy cake by Christine Jeffery

Description

I downloaded at least 50 designs to choose from this year. Being new to Threadcakes, there was just so many from which to choose. I think the kids and I went through about six designs together before I decided on Mademoiselle Galaxy. With a background in Science, I think the artistic representation of our complex universe is what drew me to this design in the end. In particular, the black holes made me giggle.

The structure I had was actually quite tall, so I used my hemisphere cake pan to create a chocolate casting for the bottom part of the sphere, and filled with marshmallows. I then secured the chocolate casting to the frame with melted chocolate, and added french vanilla cake to the top which was carve into a circle. A full layer of ganache finished off the cake with a nice smooth surface for the fondant.

The most time intensive parts of this cake were
a)figuring out how to add the halo of planets, and
b)adding in the thousands and thousands, (did I say thousands?) of stars to the bodice and the "skirt," which alone took 4.5 hours of tedious dipping and dotting.

All details apart from the cake itself are made with Chocit Modelling Chocolate and then painted (Fluoro + gels). From the very beginning, I knew this design needed to be able to glow in the dark. To get the full feeling on the starry sky, it needed light to emerge from the darkness. I used the Creative Cake Decorating Fluoro colours mixed with gel colours to obtain the tones I needed, and then mixed this with confectioners glaze to paint onto the cake and chocolate.

I thoroughly enjoyed making the cake, even the almost therapeutic monotony of all the stars in the sky. Thanks for stopping in to share in the cake love. xo
