Killer Whale DinoMike cake by Amy Blea

Description

What attracted me to this design is the super cute blue whale. Mainly because my now 14 year old's favorite toy when he was a baby was little blue whale that he played with in the bath. Then I took a closer look and saw what it really was about and loved it even more!

I wanted to start on this sooner, but with all of the other cakes I had over the past few weeks I wasn't able to get to it until pretty last minute. This cake took about 3 hours to do. Simple, but really fun cake.

In honor of the season, the cake itself is apple cider cake with a caramel butter cream filling. Then decorated in blue butter cream with a few white spots and streaks added in an attempt to match the photo. The whale and skeleton are both fondant.

To cut out the part of the whale, I hand drew the shape and cut off the top. then applied it to the front side of the cake. I wanted to keep the little wave affect in more of a 3D way so I used some extra icing to make butter cream "waves" on top. I wanted it to look like the top of the whale was popping out of the top of the cake so I added the fondant 3D top of the head, spout and tail. The skeleton was completely hand cut. I made the bones by rolling a tiny rope and cutting the two ends in half to make the bone shape.

We were eager to dig in and taste the cake that it wasn't until then that I realized I didn't add the fins at the bottom...but I still think he came out pretty cute anyway.

Speaking of digging in to the cake...it's not often that my husband gets to have an actual slice of cake rather than just cake scraps. So he was happy to oblige and take the first bites for the photos. This was the first time trying this flavor combo, and let me say that it is delicious!
