Defenders of the Sky cake by Kristy How

Description

Let me tell you a 70 year old aeronautical engineer is not the easiest fellow to come up with a birthday cake for, and knowing that I really wanted to have a go at Threadcakes, I trawled the t-shirts looking for something he loved.

The Defender of the Skies T-shirt leapt straight out at me, because the birthday boys favourite saying is "Its not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog". So this t-shirt design just made sense. (plus I could order him a t-shirt to match!)

It took a few days to plan the frame and work out how big to make him, along with projecting him back into a 3D world. and make sure he was all edible!

Once the frame was built I started working on baking the cakes, which are dense mud cakes that take forever! I layered them onto the frame with dark chocolate ganache, and crumb coated the whole body.

Next was the head...I have a son with egg allergies, but he loves rice crispie treats, and they are perfect for making a strong but light head. I took a chance at making the head separately and praying I had designed it well enough that the two would fit seamlessly. A big sigh of relief when the head went on.

The birthday boy had no idea he was getting a cake, because I am a cake decorator by trade, my family usually resign themselves to getting a cheesecake. The smile on his face was worth the 25 hours of work put in. The entire restaurant went up in protest when we go the knife out. A complete stranger actually cried!

It was a really fun experience, it challenged me into doing something new. I can honestly say I have never put a moustache on an aviating Corgi before.

Thanks! Enjoy.
