Description
The last days of October were coming up and I started having a craving for apple cake, AND there was a halloween party that I was supposed to bring cake for. Seemed like a perfect way to eat cake and find a fun design to use for Threadcakes. I searched for Apple, and found this - Deadly Bite - to use as my inspiration.
First - the cake, a lovely vanilla apple scented butter cake - lots of it! Then, a yummy brown sugar cinnamon buttercream to fill it out. I also covered it with salted caramel fondant, if that wasn't enough!
To create this image, I knew it had to stand up to have its full effect, so I built a structure based on pvc pipe, coupler and a wooden dowel for support. I built up the bottom half of the skull with rice cereal treats and covered/sculpted it with modeling chocolate (you'll see from the pictures that I ran out of white modeling chocolate and had to move on to green and red!). The upper half of the skull is a 6" 2 tiered cake, and the red apple part on top is a full, torted 8" cake.
To add to the drama of this cake, I hollowed out the top tier and filled it with gummy worms - to appeal to the kids at the halloween party!
The cake was a big hit - the kids loved the worms (as did the adults). Fun and yumminess for all!
