Hi guys!
This is my first time entering Threadcakes.
I started making cakes about 3 years ago. I LOVE art and this is just another way to be creative. Our family had an english bulldog for 11 years and he was a sweetheart, so this cake seemed perfect for me to make. They have the most expressive faces and best temperaments. I could see our Walter dressed up like this.
Sadly I really don't know how many hours it took to make him.... I work during the day so I did bits and pieces while I could. Honestly, it was quite a long time...
The basic frame work is made from pine and dowels. I tried my best to "measure", but usually I just wing it and guess. (It stresses my husband out because he does wood working and everything is soon precise! I go "Eh..... close enough!!!!!")
I decided pumpkin cake was the way to go because seriously....is anything yummier? No.... Then you fill it with vanilla buttercream. PERFECTION!
I decided to make the bulldog's head from Rice Krispy's because I could make it ahead of time and it could sit. His little stubby legs were made from RKT too. (We have a busy family so I tried to do it in bits and pieces and I knew Rice Krispys could sit with modeling chocolate and fondant for a while. Or a week or more.....) His body and the dinosaurs head is cake.
I used ganache to give him a nice sturdy base under his fondant "skin". His antlers were a challenge. At first I tried to use gum paste and they completely fell apart. After a bit of thinking and bad words, my husband sweetly suggested that I try modeling chocolate and it worked perfectly! His cocktail is also made from modeling chocolate and then I covered it in fondant to make it easier to "paint".
I decided to put one picture in the bunch (I'm sure you can guess which one) of the importance of a good photograph. I am by NO means a photographer so this was the hardest part of the whole adventure. I took roughly a zillion photos- all looking hideous with a nasty yellow glow. Once again my husband came to the rescue and we decided to carry him outside and use the natural light.
Thank you for the chance to post my work! I can't wait to do this again next year!
