We Were Tomatoes cake by Judy Stroud

Description

The decision to make a cake based on We Were Tomatoes was an easy choice. First, my hubby has the t-shirt (as you’ll see in the pics) and there is a constant battle in our house over tomatoes. I love, love, love tomatoes – he thinks they’re my favorite food (which sounds pretty lame, doesn’t it) but he will only eat tomato products if the poor things have been pulverized until they’re little red puddles of sadness – hence, this t-shirt is perfect for us :)

The design was the only easy part, unfortunately. I’ve never really carved a cake before and I’ve never attempted anything topsy-turvy (well, at least not on purpose). In the end I was really happy with how the layers turned out but I had such a hard time with the fondant :( I had to color a ton of fondant all at once so it would match and maybe I’m missing something but that was hard work! I, of course, colored WAY too much because I was so afraid I wouldn’t have enough – anyone want a green cake??? I’m not really sure how long it took to make this cake. I mostly worked when my baby would nap which means this took forever! I had invited people over to eat the cake on the 4th of July so there was no sleep while I tried to finish up the cake. I was actually finishing the cake while everyone else was enjoying the BBQ. In the rush to get things finished I almost forgot the all important shadow of the ketchup bottle – what would this design be without that menacing shadow ;-)

The ketchup bottle is all cake covered in fondant. I used a round cookie cutter and got 3 tiers from a 6” round. The tomatoes are actually cake scraps mixed with icing (sort of like the Bakerella cake balls) and covered in fondant. I decided to used cake scraps because we had a GIANT mound of cake scraps after the carving was done and even though I love cake – even I can’t eat that much.

Thanks for looking!
