My Playtree cake by Tamatha Cain

Description

You know how sometimes you really want to do something, but then you talk yourself out of it with every reason you can think of? I have really wanted to participate in this contest for a long time, but always found a reason not to (scared, usually!), but this time I decided to just start and not think. And I'm so glad I did! It's been a blast getting all up inside the the little world of My Playtree, and the little record-loving fellow (I called him 'Little Guy') and I got to be good buddies by the end of it all. :)

The cake itself is vanilla butter cake with white chocolate vanilla bean Swiss buttercream. It was filled and carved, then smoothed with cake spackle (I flipping love cake spackle) followed with more buttercream, and finally with my favorite recipe of modeling chocolate. The supports are only a regular wedding cake separator plate, two skewers, and two straws in the bottom cake (the one that lifts the whole thing and helps give the floating effect). I challenged myself to make the cake out of only cake. The figure, ladder, record player, and records were made from sugar paste and the clouds were piped from royal icing.

Photos are not retouched. Really wanted to make the Tshirt design come to life in cake! It's really neat that when I see my final photos of it in thumbnails in the photo gallery on my phone, I keep thinking it's the photo of the original design that I've had saved to use as reference! So it feels like it was successful on that count!

I chose the design after looking at Every. Single. Design. Every one that was available at that time. This one reminded me of myself as a kid, before my previous career as a singer, obsessively listening to all the music my 80's technology could get me. I love the idea of floating away on an island to just enjoy a magical record collection. But I'm a baker now, so I also imagine there's an oven behind the tree!

The design is deceptive in that it looks sort of simple at first, but the handmade items alone were pretty time consuming. I made some of the more prominent records in the shelves as individual little squares and placed them on the shelf with tweezers. I super-love little details that might not seem important to other people, or even to the final product, mainly because I love knowing they are there!

For instance, when I blew up the photo of the design to get a better look, I found that the record on top of the stack on the ground had the title 'Rainbow' on it. It was in yellow, the only yellow thing on this whole cake. Well, I had to write that tiny word on the record even though you can't see it. It makes me smile. :)))

Well thanks for reading this far! I'm so excited to be entering Threadcakes, and I hope you enjoyed looking at it!
