Prehistoric cake by Deb Williams

Description

This is my first time entering Threadcakes, the cake was intended to be for my birthday but life got in the way of completing it in time and I didn't want to rush it.

I spent ages trying to choose a design, when I came across this one it appealed to me more than any other. I used to work in I.T. before I became a mum. In my first job I had a big plastic box filled with floppy disks which nowadays are as extinct as the mammoth! Loved the fusing together of these ideas!

I first sketched out my plan with measurements so I could make the support, I did it on greaseproof paper so i could use it when making the cake, hence to chocolate on it in the picture.

I decided to use chocolate mud cake as its sturdy and would mean i didn't have to worry about a second level support and dowels to hold it up. I used a vanilla swiss meringue buttercream in between the layers.

I did get my measurements wrong when slicing up the cake, which is why there are added on chunks in places as I had to make it bigger.

I made milk chocolate ganache to coat the cake, then covered it in fondant. I don't have many photos of the process of decorating this as I got carried away with it once I started. The decoration part of this cake took about 8 hours in total, the cake assembly and ganaching about 2.

Loved the whole process, it was different for me to photograph the cake making process not just the completed cake. Will definitely enter again next year!
