This is my first time entering and I had an absolute blast working on this cake!
The process of picking a design will probably go down in the top 20% of the toughest decisions I've made... After 4 hours of scrolling through ALL the options, I settled on about 15. Over the next 3 days I would revisit the images and every time I was drawn back to this badass!
One of the major reasons for choosing this one was that I have yet to tackle a structural cake using more than a few dowels between layers. Drawing it out, measurements... math... double checking.. more math and measurements..
The first day was spent baking and assembling the base and "skeleton" of my new friend.
At first, I thought to make the inside red or pink.. like cutting into a bird.. But to make it a little more fun I opted for a colourful swirl of lemon cake and vanilla bean buttercream. Rice Krispies were used to add extra height to the tail and build out the underbelly.
The next 3 days were spent carving, masking, covering, decorating and painting.
The entire outside is modeling chocolate, except for the chain and pin which are gumpaste.
the second reason I was so intrigued by this design was figuring out how to go about creating a 2D look on a 3D cake! ^_^
A little sculpting and texturing too place... but for the most part, the major detailing was all in the painting. Making sure I got the right look was achieved by some relatively embarrassing poses. Squats, hunching, leaning, etc all took place to guarantee I was seeing the cake at the right angle while painting. ***Super glad there aren't photos facing the other way!
Unfortunately, I didn't have any special events to bring the cake to!
Thankfully, I have plenty of cake loving friends! I put the word out that free cake was to be had and throughout the day I had a few visitors stop by :)
