So when the deadline was extended for the contest, it ended up giving me a push to do an additional entry. I've been really inspired by all the painted entries, so I thought I'd give it a shot!
With the newest Star Wars movie approaching, I just had to do this design. At 31 years of age, this is also the year I finally watched the movies for the first time in my life. I watched all but one Episode now (including Spaceballs), and I have to admit, executing this cake made me realize I'm a fan. I was listening to Star Wars remixed music the whole time I was shaping and painting this cake that kept me pumped up!
This style of fondant shaping was a bit new for me, so all of it was basically me winging it! Other than my fingers, I used some shaping tools and an x-acto blade to help me shape all the characters. There is only one non-edible support I needed, and that was in the Skywalker character's light saber. I broke off a piece of a toothpick and inserted it into the fondant to help keep it upright. Otherwise, the rest was all put together with dabs of water. The sculpting part was easy for me, but using my shaping tools to cut into the fondant for depth and detail was more challenging, especially since it was harder to mask any mistakes.
I wanted to paint in details to give the 2D design a little more dimension and used a mix of vodka and food coloring.
For the final touch on the cake, I cut out fondant using my Christmas tree cookie cutters.
I decided to use up some boxed cake mix this time that I had around the house already to save time. I tried to recreate a Neopolitan cupcake recipe I knew that was half brownie, half cake. It honestly didn't work as well for this cake, so I'd definitely do it again with just a chocolate cake to balance out the texture better. I covered the cake in my homemade vanilla buttercream, and the texture was forgivable because it tasted amaze space balls.
I decided to make a video for this one too! Hope you all enjoy!!
