Description
Having taken the week off I though I'd be as 'productive' as possible... so... putting all the chores to one side I cracked on with the cake.
I checked through the gallery to measure up the competition and decided to go with my favourite and most inspired tshirt: Color-Coded Criminals!
I've only made one cake before so I thought I'd stick with the recipe from that but 'mod' it s it could roll. I baked it as normal but it came out too thick! So I cut it through the middle, chopped off the sides and laid them side by side. I already had the jam but made the buttercream (is that what it's called?) with butter and caster sugar. Having spread that generously over the cakes I did my best to roll it. Easier said than done! It took a few attempts and alot of patience but it eventually rolled! Whoop! I had to keep it rolled so swiftly put in tin foil.
Now onto the icing. Using fondant sugar I used the intructions on the box to make the icing and mixed red and yellow food colouring to make the orange dye.
Now for the messy part!
I unwrapped weird shapped swiss roll, cut the cone to make him a crayon shape and placed it on the chopping board, used the cut-off cake to make the arms and was ready for the icing. The icing and this stage was a bit too runny but I persevered anyway. After a good covering [coughtoomuchcough] Mr Orange didn't look to well (the acid scene from Robocop come to mind) so he had to go in the fridge.
Whist he was chillin' I made the black and white icing ready for tomorrow.
Day 2
This was the quick part. I simply got the icing and cake out of the fridge and once they'd warmed up a little I started to cover him with the white icing (for the shirt) and the black icing (for the suit jacket and face). As before, this was too runny. So after covering him I put him back in the fridge and got the camera ready.
Ta-da! All done - click click click munch munch munch!
