WAITING FOR MY FISH cake by Erin Wieglenda Cronbaugh

Description

This starry eyed fur ball caught my attention so he became my 2015 entry. He is made from chocolate cake, raspberry buttercream and chocolate ganache. His internal structure consists of a cake board base, 5 drinking straws and a second cake board about halfway up. He has a center wooden dowel to keep him stable. I stacked and carved him into his rough shape, then slathered him in chocolate ganache. He needed a few facial features defined so I added a nose and eyebrows with fondant, then covered him in white fondant. He got his first coat of texture with a fondant tool and a small scissors around his edges to try and make it look like fur. Then the painting began. I used airbrush colors and started with his light blue, then pinks and purples. There's a bit of orange around his eyes as well as some darker pinks and reds on his face and ears. His eyes are isomalt with a disk of painted fondant behind them. Once he was transferred to his cake drum, I scattered some cake crumbs mixed with ganache on the board around him to represent the terrain he is sitting on. That was covered with fondant, textured with aluminum foil and dry dusted. Then the perimeter was painted black with airbrush color. The backdrop is a piece of foam core board covered with white fondant. I dry dusted in the general shapes from the background, dusted in the night sky and them airbrushed the perimeter black. The stars are fondant made from a flower cutter and then trimmed down. The fondant moon was the last thing to be added. I added a chocolate support behind his head to keep the background from falling on him. He took about 20 hours. His eyes are my favorite part. My least favorite part is the new blue stain on my carpeting from knocking over a bottle of blue powdered coloring!
