Shelf Life cake by Jess Watsky

Description

This shirt means a lot to me, when I show it to people, I tell them it's what I get to do when I grow up- work in curatorial sciences. So it only seemed fitting that I, and my lovely assistant, made a cake from this.

We made our cake- a brownie base, and cut each piece into little shapes to represent the Mason jars depicted on the shirt. The fondant was very tricky. This was actually my very first- and certainly not my last! foray into using fondant, and I was worried. I'd never done a cake with such elaboration before, and neither had Patricia.

The fondant took a little measuring and approximation- we did have a thrown out batch, but in the end, it took to the color really well and looked awesome. The sugar skull was definitely our favorite part to make, though!

Overall, it took an entire day to make this. Not bad for beginners! Both our families enjoyed eating the cake and looking at the final product. Very tasty!
