Mr Chuwawa cake by Avalon Yarnes

Description

Truth is... I've been wanting to make Mr. Chuwawa for 3 years now! He had everything I was looking for in a cake design... a face, water-color, interesting and challenging shape/structure. AND I just happen to adore Lora Zombie and all of her work...so double score!

This guy was filled with yellow cake and dark chocolate ganache icing. I love me some classic flavors, brings on the nostalgia! He stood over 2' tall at 27". He is 90% cake, his body is cake from mid calf up to his head (some of his legs were done with cake pop mixer, or cake clay, cake crumbs mixed with ganache... nothings wasted here!) His decor includes modeling chocolate, fondant, rice paper and isomalt (pour hot sugar). I used one threaded rod up the center for support (covered in plastic for food safety). I have two coated aluminum wire (food safe) to support his ears and arms. There were a few toothpicks here and there also! Chuwawa took a total of 4 days from start to finish. We had some late nights, but all in good fun!

My goal was to always stay true to the "painted" look of Chuwawa, so put the airbrush away and stuck only to my paintbrushes (and q-tips) for detail and coloring. I also wanted to give his cumberbund and bow tie a fabric effect, so I used rice paper (spring roll paper). The plaid....... ohhhhh the plaid. I call it "painful plaid". Because the lines were so fine AND on a dark color AND I wanted a painted look... I went through a few scenarios. After a mini-break down, I finally found a technique I liked, even though it was a bit time consuming. I rolled out some fondant and put it through my pasta machine on the finest setting for vermicelli. I then laid out the pattern on the fondant. After that I blotted the brown over the fondant strips. I then removed the fondant strips....and... plaid was born! I completed him with a poured sugar eye glass and individually strung modeling chocolate beads.

Anddd.. done. Whew. Mr. Chuwawa has become part of the family.... in OUR BELLIES. Yeah, we ate him. Thanks so much Threadcakes, great times were had!
