Zombie at Tiffany s cake by Grace Henden

Description

This cake was full of trial and errors! Even though I watched some tutorials online on how to sculpt, it still was a first time for me and I had to make my mistakes.
First, was the head. I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a skull mold so I decided to make my own. I made a silicone mold by using 100% silicone and molding it to a plastic skull. It worked great, however, it stunk SO bad! It left a horrible vinegar smell that never went away. Although it was food safe, I decided to make another skull mold and a back up skull in case my first skull didn't last. I made the second skull with a food safe mold you can buy at Michaels. I filled up the front and sides of the mold with chocolate, then added my rice krispies (RK) to bulk it up. My first head split in half, leaving the chocolate face and some RK, so I had to try it again making sure to follow Liz Mareks technique on face making with RK, After I finally got it right, I started working on the face. This was my favorite part to do! I loved adding skin on and peeling it back and coloring in the blood!
Next, was the body. I decided to make a pumpkin cake since its fall. However, I accidentally bought pumpkin bread mix. I ended up using my cake recipe, added in the mix, and an extra egg and a little extra oil. It came out great! The filling was ganache. I carved what I thought the body was would be and just carved more away after I set it up with the structure. The structure was just plastic pipes and copper. I used RK for the arms and wrapped them in fondant. The hands were made of modeling chocolate. I t was fun to add pieces of skin to the top hand.
Another oops moment, was when I realized her hand was really disproportionate to her body, so I had to give her some surgery, which I failed to document. I cut off some of her arm so shorten it.
Her cigarette was the last thing, so I didn't really focus much on it. I was already happy how it turned out without it! So, instead of a cigarette, she has fat joint. Keeping up with the times! I'm assuming a joint would be better for the pain than nicotine!
I took it into my husbands work on base and everyone loved it! They all couldn't believe it was cake! Definitely made it worth all the work!
